Dr. Won Yong Shon has accrued more than 30 years of inimitable experience as a professor of orthopedics on behalf of the Korea University College of Medicine. He has maintained activity in this role since 1986. In addition to his position as an educator, Dr. Shon has likewise distinguished himself as both a surgeon and general orthopedist of great talent. Moreover, he has served admirably as an officer in the South Korean Navy from 1983-86 and South Korean government as a consultant for the Korea Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service and with the Korea Food and Drug Administration, now known as the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, between 2004 and 2007, Advisory Committee (Medical Part) of The Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission between 2008-2014, review committee of Korea Medical Association Medical Indemnity Mutual Aid since 2008 and Mutual Dispute Mediation Committee of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport from 2013 to 2017.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Won Yong Shon pursued an education at Korea University, from which he attained a Bachelor of Medicine in 1978. Within the next several years, he successfully earned both a Master of Medicine Degree in 1981 and a Doctor of Philosophy in medicine in 1987. He has trained in prestigious institutions all over the world including Endo-Klinik Germany and the Hospital for Special Surgery U.S. Following these achievements, Dr. Shon has proven his scholarly mettle by serving as a translator for the book “Revision of Total Hip Arthroplasty” and contributing numerous articles to professional journals. At present he is the Honorary Director of Bumin Hospital, Busan, South Korea.
In order to remain aware of developments in his field of study, Dr. Shon has avidly maintained his membership within organizations pertinent to his interests. To wit, he started as a member of the Korean Orthopaedic Association, the European Orthopaedic Research Society, and served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Korean Orthopedic Association in 1999. He was President of The Korean Musculoskeletal Tissue Transplantation Society in 2004, President of The Korean Hip Society in 2005, President of the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA) in 2008, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Korean Orthopedic Association and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Korean Association of Tissue Banks in 2013-14, and 2019 President of The Korean Orthopedic Association.
Dr. Shon is happily married to his wife, Kae Jeoung Kang. Together they are the proud parents of two daughters: SooMin Shon (MFA in Graphic Design, Yale University, BA in Art History and Economics, Cornell University and Diploma in Piano, Juilliard School, Pre-college artist, Part-time faculty, Parsons The New School University, Visiting Assistant Professor, Pratt Institute), Kelly WooJung Shon (AB Sociology, Princeton University, Professional Golfer of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), Investor Relations and Business Development, Analyst, The Carlyle Group –AlpInvest). A practicing Buddhist, Dr. Shon eagerly partakes in such avocational pursuits as mountain climbing.
