HongKyu Kim, D.E.D., (Doctor of Environmental Design), Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who

Dr. HongKyu Kim has been endorsed by Marquis Who’s Who as a leader in the engineering industry

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, November 28, 2018, Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present HongKyu Kim, D.E.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Kim celebrates many years’ experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. For the past two years, Dr. HongKyu Kim was a committee member of the Seoul Metropolitan Planning Commission in the Seoul Metropolitan Government in the Republic of Korea from 2016 to 2018. Prior to this appointment, he was the vice president of the Korea Institute of Urban Planners from 2013 to 2015. Overlapping this position, he served as the head of the Institute of Korea Planning Education for the Korea Planning Association from 2012 to 2016. Also at the Korea Planning Association, he was on the board of directors from 1996 to 2004 and from 2011 to 2015, and was an executive director from 2004 to 2011.

From 2012 to 2014, Dr. HongKyu Kim was a committee member of the Central Urban Planning Commission with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in the Republic of Korea. From 2011 to 2013, he was an advisor on the advisory board for the Presidential Commission on Architecture Policy belonging to the President of the Republic of Korea. Additionally, he has spent many years on the board of directors at the Urban Design Institute of Korea from 2002 to 2006, 2008 to 2010, and 2012 to 2016.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kim has had great involvement with Yonsei University. From 2006 to 2012, he was a director and master planner of development and construction of Yonsei Songdo International Campus, and from the end of 2005 to the beginning of 2006, he was the master planner in land use planning, development and design of the campus. He considers his time there to be the highlight of his career. From 1997 to 2001, 2007 to 2008, and 2009 to 2011, he was the director of research at the Institute of Urban & Transportation Science at the Yonsei University School of Engineering.

From 2004 to 2006, Dr. Kim served as the chief editor of educational broadcasting at Yonsei University. He was also the director of research at the Institute of Industry and Engineering Research from 2003 to 2005 and has been the professor in the department of urban planning and engineering since 2002. Furthermore, he was the head of the department of urban planning and engineering from 1995 to 2000, 2001 to 2002, and 2003 to 2004, and an associate professor in the department from 1997 to 2002. In this department, he was also an assistant professor from 1994 to 1997.

Moreover, Dr. Kim was the head of planning at Yonsei University’s School of Engineering from 2002 to 2004 and the head of the department of urban planning at the Graduate School of Engineering from 1997 to 2000 and from 2008 to 2009. From 1989 to 1994, he was a senior researcher at the Institute of Housing Research in the Korea National Housing Cooperation. Before holding this role, he interned at City Scape in Austin, TX, in 1987.

From 2000 to 2001, Dr. HongKyu Kim devoted himself to his research as a visiting scholar at the department of urban planning at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He was also the official master planner of projects in the Republic of Korea, including Dongtan New Town (Area:9.03 km²), Wirye New Town (Area:6,774,628m²), Gangwon Innovation City (Area:3,597,000m²), Singil New Town (Area:1,409,910m²) and Wongdang New Town (Area:1,306,140m²). Other official master planning roles in Korea include Buncheon Film and Culture Site (Area:330,264m²), Buncheon Ojung urban development (Area:562,000m²), and Neunggok Housing site development (Area:1,210,000㎡).

Additionally, Dr. Kim was involved as the master landscape architect for the environmental sculpture and public artifacts at the Jeonjaeul Neighborhood Park, the five multicultural families sculpture and the Incheon Asaid Athlete Village from 2013 to 2014. He served as the private master planner for the Yonsei Wonju Campus 40th Anniversary Plaza (Area:52,800m²) in 2018, the Seosan industrial city development (Area:3,966,000m²) from 2017 to 2018, the SeHyoJe (Area:49,000m²) from 2015 to 2017, the Yonsei Incheon international campus (Area:925,624m²) from 2005 to 2012, and the SeoSan B Block (Area:702,312m²) in 2007.

Dr. Kim was the master planner for the Dongducheon Theme Park and mixed use development (Area:5,619,869m²) from 2006 to 2007, the Jeju Pacific Land re-development (Area:33,000m²) in 2006, the Heyri Art Valley (Area:495,870m²) from 1998 to 2002, SeoWhaChon (Area:211,571m²) from 1998 to 1999, and Boramwon (Area:2,214,000m²) in 1990. He has always been interested in painting and architecture, but his studies at various universities helped him identify his passion for urban design and landscape architecture.

Dr. Kim’s academic pursuits began at Yonsei University in the Republic of Korea from 1975 to 1977 and 1980 to 1982, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in architectural engineering. In the gap of studies at Yonsei University, he served in the Korea Military Service from 1977 to 1979. Following this accomplishment, he obtained a Master of Architecture in the urban design program at Ohio State University, where he studied from 1982 to 1985.

While there, Dr. Kim also received a Master of Landscape Architecture from 1983 to 1985. He continued his studies at Texas A&M University from 1985 to 1989, where he earned a Doctor of Environmental Design. Ultimately, he attended the Korea National Open University, where he studied culture and liberal arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2017.

Since finding his calling in life, Dr. Kim has been involved with the master plans of group exhibitions for the Asian Environmental Urban and Architecture Design in countries like China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. Furthermore, he was the master planner for two solo exhibitions in the United States for the Macro & Micro-Environmental Space Design at Urbana Champaign, Illinois and the 43rd Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning Annual Conference at Cleveland, Ohio.

Domestically, Dr. Kim was the master planner for the Heyri Art Valley & Seowhachon Archives, the Railroad Station area development of Gyeongin and Suin Line, the Incehon International Urban EXPO, the Macro & Micro Ill-Heyri master plan archive and the Innovation Design for Aging Society. Other exhibitions include the urban design for Human, the Macro & Micro II-Urban and the 20th Invited Architects Exhibition of the Korean Institute of Architects.

Aside from architecture, Dr. Kim was invited with art exhibitions for printing and mobile art including the DigiFun Art Urban Scape, Mobile Art, Seoul City Museum in 2015, the Urban Trace I and II in 2006 and 2008, the Disappearing Trace in 2004 and Visceral Abstractions at the AGORA Gallery (Chelsea, New York, U.S.A.) in 2004. In 2015, he was the master planner of AhHyun Central Church site development, and in 2016, was the master planner of the Buncheon Film and Culture site development.

Dr. Kim’s accomplishments over the years have been recognized in numerous ways by his peers. The Korea Planners Association named him the director of the Korea Planners Education Academy in 2012 and director of the Korea Planners Education Institute in 2014. Furthermore, at Yonsei University, he was the master planner of POSCO Bridge building in 2000 and director of Yonsei Incheon International Campus master plan (Area:925,624m²)and construction (Area:350,418m²) from 2006  to 2012.

Beyond these achievements, Dr. Kim received the First Prize for the Hanam Kamil Housing Development Master Plan Competition (Area:1,688,000m²) in 2010, Second Prize at the MokDong Apartment Master Plan Competition (Area:4,368,464㎡) in 2010, First Prize at the Incheon International Urban EXPO Master Plan Competition (Area:495,870m²) in 2009, TaeAn Tourism & Leisure Industrial City International Nominated Master Plan Competition (Area:15,603 km²), First Prize, Hyundai City Corporation (2006).   Second Prize at the Imae Natural Park Design Competition (Area:2,251,540m²) in 1995, and First Prize at the Daejeon EXPO Science Park Site Renovation Master Plan Competition (**Area:396,000m²) in 1994. Additionally, Dr. Kim won first place prizes at the TaeAn Tourism & Leisure Industrial City Master Plan Competition (Area:15,603 km²) in 2005, the YoungAm & Haenam Tourism & Leisure Industrial City Master Plan Competition (Area:15,605km²) in 2005, the Lotte World Renovation International Nominated Competition (Area:128,245㎡) in 1999, the Daejeon EXPO Science Park Site Revitalization Master Plan (Area:396,000m²) in 1999 and the Philippine Centennial EXPO International Master Plan Competition (Area:595,000m²) in 1996.

Dr. Kim was named a top student member of Sigma Lambda Delta of Honor Society in Landscape Architecture in 1988 and Tau Sigma Delta of Honor Society in Architecture and Allied Arts in 1987 at Texas A&M University. He also received the Korea Architectural Culture Excellence Award from the Korea Institute of Registered Architects in 2011, the United States National College Architectural Design Award from the United States Achievement Academ y(Lexington, Kansas, U.S.A.) in 1987, the Graduation Architecture Design Excellence Award from Yonsei University in 1982, and the Academic Excellence Award for three consecutive semesters from Yonsei University in 1980 and 1981.

For his artwork, Dr. Kim won the 6th Annual ‘Seasons’ Art Competition for Digital Mobile Arts in the Special Merit category award in 2017. For his exceptional papers, he was given awards for the Academic Conference of Korea Planners Association in an Urban Design Field in 2014 and 2016, and an award from the Academic Conference of Urban Design Institute of Korea in 2013. Moreover, he has won six excellence awards for his lectures from Yonsei University and the Yonsei Cyber Education Community Center.

Alongside his awards for excellence, Dr. Kim has also received several full scholarships, including from the department of landscape architecture from Texas A&M University. Ohio State University gave him a full scholarship from the department of architecture and the department of landscape architecture, including a fellowship. Yonsei University gave him a full scholarship and awarded him the academic excellence scholarship for three consecutive semesters. Other scholarships include the Samyang Corporation Scholarship and the Yoo, MyungOak Fellowship.

Dr.  Kim attributes his success to his process of identifying the field in which he was interested, becoming an expert in that field, and having patience. In the next five years, he hopes to have written a book and began an educational program that balances between urban planning and architecture.
