Dr. Minkyu Choi Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Engineering

GYEONGGI-DO, SOUTH KOREA, December 9, 2019, Dr. Minkyu Choi has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Inspired by his father Professor Seung-Bok Choi who is a pioneer of Smart Structures and Systems, Dr. Choi decided to study on Smart Materials especially piezoelectric ceramics. He earned a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from Korea University in 2013 for studying lead-free piezoelectric materials and its sintering behavior. He began a career in engineering in 2009 as an assistant engineer for the head module team at the Research and Development Center at Protec Co. Ltd., developing dispensing system using piezoelectric module. From 2010 to 2013, he worked as an engineer in the Advanced Materials and Devices Laboratory for the Corporate Research and Development Institute at Samsung Electro-Mechanics. Subsequently, Dr. Choi flourished at the Pennsylvania State University’s Materials Research Institute as a visiting researcher for the International Center for Actuators & Transducers. He concluded his academic efforts at the Pennsylvania State University in 2018, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science and Engineering for studying piezoelectric loss by ferroelectric polarization and proposing a new error-less characterization method. For his efforts in the field, Dr. Choi was honored with Student Competition 2nd Place Award for “Crystallographic Orientation Dependence of Losses in 1% Nb-Doped PZT Ceramics” at the 2016 International Workshop on Acoustic Transduction Materials and Devices. His research was highlighted as the Key Scientific Article by Advances in Engineering in 2018. He was further presented with the Robert E. Newnham Award for Research Excellence from the Pennsylvania State University in 2018.

Today, Dr. Choi excels as a staff engineer of MLCC Materials T/F for the Corporate Research and Development Institute at Samsung Electro-Mechanics. In this capacity, he studies dispersion and grinding effects on ceramic powders and solid-state synthesis of BT ceramics using nano-sized particles, as well as powder analysis. In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Choi is especially proud of contributing to 16 patents, 18 SCI papers and 28 conference presentations, including researches on piezoelectric materials, losses and devices.

Looking toward the near future, Dr. Choi aims to seek fundamentals of loss factors to improve the reliability of ceramic components and improve the ceramic processing for the next generation electro-ceramics.
